Uniformed Public Services

Prepare for a career in the uniformed public services at Moulton. You’ll develop the fitness, confidence and discipline needed for roles in the police, fire service, armed forces and beyond. With hands-on training, outdoor activities and industry insight, you’ll gain the skills to succeed in demanding and rewarding careers.

At Moulton College, you’ll be part of a supportive and challenging environment designed to prepare you for life in the uniformed services. Our tutors have real industry experience and understand what it takes to succeed. They will help you build confidence, discipline and resilience throughout your course.

You’ll train in purpose-built facilities for fitness and strength and conditioning, developing the physical and mental standards expected in the sector. Much of your learning takes place outdoors, where you’ll take part in activities such as hiking, expedition work and team challenges. These build leadership, teamwork and problem-solving skills.

Enrichment is a key part of your experience. You’ll take part in drills and structured training inspired by the Royal Navy, Royal Air Force and Army, alongside guest speakers from organisations such as the police and emergency services. You’ll also take part in trips to places such as the Houses of Parliament, Bletchley Park and Courts of Law to understand how public services operate in practice.

Our strong links with industry give you valuable insight into roles such as policing, fire and rescue, border force and the military. You’ll learn how to prepare for interviews, fitness tests and recruitment processes, giving you a real advantage when applying for your next step.

Our uniformed public services courses provide clear progression from Level 2 through to Level 3, helping you build your skills, knowledge and confidence step by step.

At Level 2, you’ll build a strong foundation in key areas such as teamwork, leadership, fitness, citizenship and diversity. You’ll also take part in a range of outdoor and adventure activities and expeditions, helping you develop your practical skills, resilience and ability to work effectively in a team. 

Activities such as rock climbing, kayaking and orienteering are an important part of the course, allowing you to gain hands-on experience in challenging and engaging environments.

At Level 3, you can choose between the Diploma or Extended Diploma in Uniformed Public Services. Both courses build on your knowledge, but the Extended Diploma is the preferred route and includes a wider range of units. The Diploma is available as an alternative pathway if you are studying maths and English alongside your studies.

Across both courses, you’ll study topics such as leadership, public service skills, outdoor and adventurous activity, teamwork and communication. You’ll also develop a strong understanding of behaviour, resilience and professional standards.

Career opportunities include police officer, firefighter, soldier, prison officer, border force officer, coastguard, security manager, RAF officer, Royal Navy officer and many more roles across the public services sector.

Your learning is active, practical and designed to reflect real-life public service environments.

You’ll take part in fitness training, classroom-based theory and outdoor activities that challenge you physically and mentally. This includes expedition work, team exercises and leadership tasks that help you develop resilience, problem-solving and communication skills.

A large part of your learning focuses on outdoor and adventurous activities, where you’ll build confidence through real-world challenges. You’ll also study topics such as teamwork, leadership, behaviour and the structure of public services.

Enrichment plays a key role in your development. You’ll hear from guest speakers in roles such as police officers, firefighters and military personnel, giving you first-hand insight into careers in the sector. You’ll also take part in trips and visits that help you understand how public services operate in the wider world.

You’ll be supported in preparing for your next steps, including guidance on recruitment processes, fitness tests and interview preparation. This ensures you are ready for employment or further study.

Uniformed Public Services FAQs

The Level 3 Extended Diploma is the main route and includes a wider range of units, preparing you fully for progression. The Level 3 Diploma is a smaller course and is often chosen alongside continued study in maths and English should you not achieve a grade 4 in these subjects at GCSE.

Careers include police officer, firefighter, soldier, prison officer, border force officer, coastguard, security manager and roles within the armed forces.

The equipment list for Uniformed Public Services can be found in the Champion Workwear brochure. All orders with Champion Workwear can be placed via their website, by telephone, email or by visiting their shop in person.

In addition to the essential items listed, you will need a pair of black, robust boots without a steel toe cap.

If you have been awarded a bursary, please quote your student number when placing your order. For boots, please send your receipt to [email protected] to arrange reimbursement. PPE is only required during practical lessons.

You do not need to be highly fit to start, but you will take part in regular fitness training and will be expected to improve your fitness throughout the course.
