Starting a higher education course is an exciting step, but we know that university-level study can bring new challenges too. At Moulton College, you’ll have access to a range of support designed specifically to help you settle in, develop your confidence and succeed throughout your studies.

Caroline Caplan
Higher Skills Learning Support Tutor
Caroline’s background is in the learning support environment where she’s spent the last 15 years changing the lives of students. She has a postgraduate diploma in Adult Dyslexia Diagnosis and Support which has helped her to provide tailored support to those with specific needs.
Since joining Moulton College in 2009, Caroline has created and established a specialist support service for higher education students. This Service provides disability advice and support, and study skills support to HE students who require additional help.
“My favourite thing about my role is seeing students develop academically, and gain confidence in their studies. I’ve watched previous Moulton students progress from their foundation degrees to studying PHDs, and others go into rewarding careers. Some have even entered the teaching profession!”
Caroline has one piece of advice for all students who might be seeking additional support:
“Everyone needs help with their studies from time to time, don’t be afraid to ask for help."
Academic and study skills support
Higher education involves greater independence, more in-depth research and a different approach to assignments than you may have experienced before.
We can help you build the skills you need to become a confident independent learner, including areas such as:
- academic writing
- research and referencing
- planning and structuring assignments
- managing your workload and deadlines
- developing effective study techniques
- using feedback to improve your work.
Developing these skills is a normal part of progressing into higher education, and support is available whether you are returning to education after a break or progressing directly from further education.
Wellbeing and personal support
Your wellbeing matters just as much as your academic progress.
Higher education students can access Moulton College’s wider wellbeing and student support services, including one-to-one support when you need to talk through a concern.
Our Wellbeing Hub is available on campus, and students also have access to the College’s Student Support Programme, which provides support 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
If you’re unsure who you need to speak to, start with your HE Success Coach or a member of the student support team. They can listen, offer guidance and help you access the most appropriate support.
Additional learning support
If you have a disability, specific learning difficulty, sensory impairment, medical condition or other additional need, we can work with you to identify the support that will help you access your course and study as independently as possible.
Depending on your individual needs, this could include reasonable adjustments, specialist equipment or software, adapted learning resources and specialist support.
We encourage you to tell us about any support needs as early as possible so that arrangements can be discussed before or at the start of your course.
Disabled Students’ Allowance
You may also be eligible for Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) to help with additional study-related costs resulting from a disability, long-term health condition, mental health condition or specific learning difficulty.
Our team can guide you through the DSA process and help you understand the evidence and assessments you may need.
If you are eligible, DSA support is based on your individual needs and could help towards specialist equipment, software and other forms of study support.
Supporting you to become independent
Our aim is not simply to provide support when you need it, but to help you develop the confidence and independence you will need throughout your studies and beyond.
Your support arrangements can be reviewed as your course progresses, allowing them to adapt as your needs change.
