Professional Bakery

The bakery industry is growing fast and offers many exciting career options. At Moulton College, you’ll train in industry standard facilities and develop strong practical skills. You’ll learn everything from artisan baking to large scale production, helping you build the knowledge needed to turn your passion for baking into a real career.

Moulton College is one of the few places in the region that specialises in professional bakery.

You’ll learn in our Food and Drink Innovation Centre, which includes a full bakery with commercial mixers, deck ovens and specialist tools. These facilities match real industry kitchens, so you can build the skills employers look for.

Our tutors have years of experience in the baking industry and will help you develop both accuracy and creativity. You’ll also benefit from links with employers and suppliers who support the course, provide ingredients and equipment, and share insight into current trends.

You won’t only learn in the classroom. You’ll take part in competitions, work on industry style tasks and create your own product ideas. These activities help you gain confidence, think creatively and understand how bakery businesses work.

Whether you want to work in artisan baking, retail or large scale food production, you’ll be supported in a professional and friendly environment that helps you aim high.

There are clear bakery pathways at Moulton College, whatever level you start at.

Level 1 – Hospitality & Catering

You’ll learn basic kitchen skills, build confidence and understand the basics of food preparation.

Level 2 – Professional Bakery

You’ll develop core baking techniques and learn the science behind ingredients and baking processes.

Level 3 – Advanced Bakery

You’ll expand your skills across all stages of production, including preparation, baking, finishing and presentation. You’ll learn techniques such as making fermented products, flour based items and sugar or chocolate work. Optional units allow you to focus on areas you enjoy most.

Throughout your course, you’ll build practical skills, technical knowledge and business awareness. You can also choose a bakery related apprenticeship, such as Level 2 Baker or Level 2 Commis Chef.

These qualifications can lead to careers in artisan baking, bakery science and technology, food production, food safety, quality control or product development. You can also progress to Level 4 or higher study in areas such as food manufacturing, hospitality management or business.

Learning at Moulton College is practical and reflects real bakeries.

You’ll usually spend one day a week in the bakery, developing hands on skills. The rest of the week includes theory and technical learning, so you understand how and why baking processes work.

You’ll also develop important workplace skills such as teamwork, communication, organisation and problem solving. These skills help you feel confident working in a busy kitchen or bakery.

You’ll take part in enrichment activities such as competitions and live briefs, which help you learn about industry trends, build connections and grow your confidence.

Enterprise is an important part of the course too. You may design products for sale or create your own bakery ideas, learning about pricing, branding and customer expectations.

This approach helps you build skills, confidence and independence so you are ready to enter a bakery environment and make an impact.
