Moulton College’s Sports Academies are a big part of student life. You can join football, rugby, basketball, cricket or netball. You’ll train with professional coaches and receive support from specialists such as physiotherapists and strength and conditioning experts. Many academy students compete locally, regionally and nationally, gaining experience in competitive sport.

Our partnerships with major clubs – including Northampton Saints RFC, Northampton Titans, Wellingborough Town FC and Northamptonshire County Cricket Club – give you access to industry insight, coaching opportunities and real world networks.

Teaching is delivered by experienced staff, supported by guest speakers, trips and competitions. You’ll train, compete, research and gain hands on experience all in one place. This helps you build the skills, confidence and connections for a career in sport, fitness, coaching or sports science.

Our sport courses offer clear progression routes from Level 1 up to Level 4 and beyond, allowing you to grow your skills step by step. You enter at the level that’s right for you, based on your existing knowledge and qualifications, with options available from foundation through to undergraduate degrees.

Level 1 and Level 2

You’ll build a strong foundation in fitness, teamwork, coaching basics and practical participation. You’ll begin to understand how sport performance works and why active lifestyles are important.

Level 3

You’ll follow a detailed study programme. You’ll learn subjects such as anatomy and physiology, fitness training and programming, sports leadership and coaching. You’ll take part in practical performance sessions and study topics such as sports psychology. You’ll also explore more advanced areas including sports business, research methods, event organisation, skill development and fitness testing. Work experience helps you gain insight into the industry

Level 4 and higher

Higher level study is available in partnership with the University of Northampton, supporting your progression into employment or university level courses.
Career options in sport are wide and varied. You could become a physiotherapist, strength and conditioning coach, sports therapist, personal trainer, performance analyst, sport scientist or gym/health club manager. There are also opportunities in coaching and education, such as PE teacher, sports lecturer or multi sports coach, as well as media based careers like sports commentator.

With the option to progress from Level 1 up to university level study, you can build your sporting future all in one place.

Learning at Moulton College is practical and reflects real jobs within the sport and fitness sector.

You’ll take part in practical sessions, classroom theory and independent study. You’ll learn about anatomy, physiology, coaching, sports psychology and fitness programming. You’ll also develop practical skills such as testing, training and analysing performance.

Most of your training takes place in specialist facilities, including strength and conditioning areas, sports labs and massage suites. You’ll also use the on site leisure centre and wider sports facilities to develop skills in real sporting situations.

Work experience is a key part of your course. You’ll complete placements and apply your learning in real settings, supported by tutors and industry partners. You’ll also take part in competitions, events, trips and enrichment activities to build your experience and confidence.

Our Sports Academies offer extra chances to develop your sporting ability through professional level coaching and structured training.

This mix of theory, practical learning and industry experience ensures you graduate with the skills and confidence needed for a future in sport.

Sport FAQs

Sport focuses on participation, coaching and performance. Sports science explores the scientific principles behind performance, including anatomy, physiology, psychology and biomechanics.

You’ll progress from Level 1 through to Level 3 or beyond, building skills each year. Your course will include theory, practical sessions, work experience and enrichment. Many learners continue into higher education, allowing you to study at Moulton for up to five years.

No. Courses are designed to support students at all levels. You’ll develop your fitness, skills and knowledge throughout your studies.

Our Sports Academies are designed to complement your studies while developing your skills in sports such as basketball, cricket, football, netball and rugby.

You’ll benefit from high-quality coaching delivered in partnership with organisations including Northampton Saints, Northamptonshire Titans Basketball Club, Northamptonshire County Cricket Club and Wellingborough Town Football Club.

Alongside training, you’ll gain valuable work experience and work towards a nationally recognised vocational qualification.

You’ll need appropriate sportswear, including indoor trainers with non-marking soles, outdoor trainers and sport-specific clothing. Some courses or academies may require additional kit. A full kit list is provided before you start.

Career options include personal trainer, physiotherapist, sports scientist, strength and conditioning coach, PE teacher, sports therapist and more.

The Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS) is a Sport England-backed programme that supports talented athletes to balance their sporting commitments with their education.

As a TASS-accredited college, we provide flexible support to help student-athletes succeed in both their studies and their sport. This includes adapting academic commitments around training and competition, allowing you to work towards a recognised qualification while continuing to develop your sporting potential and pursue your wider interests.
