Foundation Learning

Foundation Learning at Moulton College helps you build confidence, learn new skills and prepare for life beyond college. Our courses are for young people with different abilities and backgrounds. You will learn in small groups, get plenty of support and enjoy practical activities that help you grow.

Our Foundation Learning courses are tailored to your specific needs. Students join us for all kinds of reasons – some need a fresh start, some want to become more independent, and others want to take their next step in education or work.

We welcome students from all backgrounds who might benefit from our courses, including SEND students or those who may have attended special schools or alternative provision.

Because Moulton College is a land based college, many of your sessions can take place outdoors or in real working spaces. You may try activities such as animal care, horse care, gardening, farming or construction, which give you the chance to learn by doing. Practical learning helps many students enjoy college again and discover new interests.

Our staff take time to get to know you and support you in the way that works best. You will learn in small groups, which helps you settle in and feel safe. Life skills are at the heart of our courses. You will practise everyday tasks, communication, teamwork and becoming more independent. These skills help you in college, at home and in future jobs.

We also work closely with parents and carers, so everyone feels supported. Our aim is simple: to help you grow, gain confidence and feel proud of your progress.

Foundation Learning has courses from Pre Entry Level to Level 1, so there is a place for everyone to begin. From there, you can move through different pathways designed to help you become more independent and ready for the future.

Students usually follow one or more of these pathways:

Essential Skills (Level 1)

Helps you build confidence, communication and the basics you need for learning.

Independence Pathway (Level 2)

Focuses on everyday life skills such as cooking, travel, self care and getting along with others.

Vocational Pathway (Level 3)

Further develop your life skills and gain experience in a chosen subject area like animal care, horse care, gardening, farming or construction to prepare for further study or work.

We also offer the following courses to teach you practical skills in a chosen subject area:

  • Introductory Certificate in Vocational Studies
  • Certificate in Hospitality and Catering
  • Supported Internship

Many students stay with us for several years, moving from one level to the next. You may progress into other courses or into work with support. Your tutor will guide you through each step, so you always know your next goal.

Learning in Foundation Studies is calm, friendly and supportive. You will be taught in a small group with a tutor and support assistants who get to know you well.

Lessons are practical and varied, and you will usually stay with the same group for most of your week.

You will learn through:

  • hands on tasks
  • group activities
  • outdoor learning
  • life skills sessions
  • vocational tasters in areas like animals, gardening and land based work
  • community visits and real world experiences

Work experience is an important part of learning here. You may visit shops, cafés, farms, gardens or other community settings where you can practise real skills with staff support. These experiences help you build confidence, meet new people and learn what you enjoy.

Assessment is designed to help you succeed. You may build a portfolio of your work, complete small tasks or take part in simple practical activities. The aim is to help you grow at your own pace while celebrating what you achieve.
