Construction is a growing industry and skilled workers are in high demand. When you study Construction Trades at Moulton College, you train in workshops that look and feel like real building sites. Our tutors have done the job themselves, so they know exactly what employers expect.
You’ll learn the practical skills needed for bricklaying, carpentry or groundworks, but you’ll also learn the behaviours that matter on site – things like turning up on time, having a good attitude and working safely with others. These will help you stand out when you apply for jobs.
We work closely with employers, including major housebuilders. This means you could take part in real projects, hear from professionals and learn about the different jobs available in the sector. These links help you understand what work is really like and give you a clear idea of where your course can take you.
It’s great if you already know which trade you want to study, but it doesn’t matter if you’re still deciding. We make it easy to see what each option involves and offer great facilities and real industry insight whatever you decide. We offer several routes into construction so you can choose the path that suits you best.
Level 1 Diploma in Construction Skills
A great starting point if you’re unsure which trade to choose. You’ll try bricklaying, carpentry and groundworks so you can see what you enjoy.
Level 1 Diploma in Bricklaying or Carpentry
Learn the essentials in either of these trades – you choose which one. You’ll get an introduction to the industry and be taught core skills as well as health and safety.
Level 2 Diplomas in Bricklaying or Site Carpentry
Build on your foundations from Level 1 by learning more advanced skills and gain an industry-standard qualification.
Construction Skills is taught at our Moulton campus, while Bricklaying and Carpentry take place at both Moulton and Higham Ferrers.

Careers
Our courses teach you the theory and give you hands-on experience.
You can go onto a variety of careers including Bricklayer, Carpenter, Wood Machinist and Constructions Labourer.
As you gain experience, you could move into specialist jobs, become a supervisor or even run your own business.
Your lessons will feel like working on a real site. Most of your time is spent in our industry-standard workshops, where you’ll practise the tasks and techniques used in the real world. Tutors demonstrate each skill, then guide you as you complete the work yourself. You’ll learn how to read drawings, measure accurately and follow safety rules.
We work with a range of employers who help us shape your learning. You may take part in work experience, hear from guest speakers or visit real construction projects. These experiences give you a clearer picture of what working in construction is really like.
You’ll also develop important skills such as teamwork, communication and problem solving. These are built naturally into your course, so you become confident and work ready without needing separate lessons.
Assessment is based on a mix of:
- Practical tasks in the workshop
- Written work and knowledge questions
- Teacher observations
- A portfolio of your completed work

Construction Trades FAQs
You can choose from three main areas: Bricklaying, Carpentry & Joinery, and Construction Skills.
Bricklaying teaches you how to build walls, foundations and structures using different brick bonds and techniques.
Carpentry & Joinery focuses on fitting and building wooden structures like frames, floors, doors and stair parts.
Construction Skills gives you a mix of different trades. You’ll try a bit of everything which is helpful if you're not sure what you want to do.
All courses are practical and hands on, so you’ll spend a lot of time learning real skills in the workshop.
You’ll study in our industry standard workshops at either our Moulton or Higham Ferrers campuses.
Construction Skills (Level 1) is taught only at Moulton because the course uses specialist mixed trade training spaces.
Bricklaying and Carpentry & Joinery are available at both campuses, giving you more choice about where to study.
All workshops use real tools, real materials and realistic setups so your training feels like professional site work.
That’s completely fine, lots of students aren’t sure when they start. The Level 1 Construction Skills course is designed exactly for this.
